I "cut my woodworking teeth" on the lathe making round things. What started as a desire to make one simple round table leg turned into a major, successful hobby. I have been fortunate enough to have had my work well received by the turning world, winning several awards, being juried into major shows, and having quite a few magazine articles. My turning work has been interrupted briefly by a move, but I hope to return to it soon.

Ambrosia maple bowl
  • Ambrosia maple bowl
Beautiful bowl made from maple that has had an infestation of ambrosia beetles. The beetles tunnel in and bring a fungus that discolors the wood, leaving very attractive streaks
  • Shallow white ash bowl
A pretty little white ash bowl made from a tree that fell over in Dundalk, MD in a hurricane.
  • Large maple burl bowl
18" wide bowl made from big leaf maple burl. Quite a centerpiece, looks even nicer now as it has darkened with age.
  • The Devil's Bowling Ball
"The Devil's Bowling Ball" Aptly named by an admirer. Maple burl hollow form turned thin, scorched with a torch, then soaked in oil to reveal the beautiful flame patterns
  • Natural edge burl bowl
The interesting texture on the rim of this maple burl bowl is what is naturally found underneath the bark of a burl. It is really sharp and great care must be taken to not get the knuckles near it while spinning around on the lathe.
  • Pyrographed cherry bowl
16" black cherry bowl with a pyrographed pattern. Click the image for a more detailed shot of the pyrography.
  • Californiawalnut
Beautiful little slab of claro walnut, turned into a dish with some bark left intact on one side near the rim
  • Cherrybenefitbowllarge
Especially nice black cherry bowl. I try to turn my bowls with a continuous curve on the outside profile, avoiding any flat spots. Not the easiest thing to do, but well worth the effort.
  • Condriftlarge
"Continental Drift" One of my museum pieces on display in Hong Kong, this is a maple burl hollow form, hollowed through a natural void, then gold leafed on the interior. In the Raymond Wong collection
  • Cuttingbowl23
A platter made of a segmented design that I helped popularize. The subject of an article in "Woodturning Design" magazine in 2005
  • Glossy1maple
Glossy silver maple hollow form. This spectacular piece of wood was found at a local log dump! Finished with an ebony collar.
  • Gregsplatterlarge
This beautiful piece of maple burl didn't need me to do anything special to display it, so I turned a simple platter form to show it off. One of the nicest pieces of wood I've ever seen.
  • Horns2
I'm trying to replicate a 100 year old hunting horn for a friend. I can get it to look right but not sound right - but I will eventually.
  • Mapleburlplatterlarge
17" wide maple burl platter, inlaid with bits of gold leaf here and there.
  • Mapleburlsmalllarge
Little maple burl hollow form, maybe 3" tall, but with an almost perfect profile. In the Raymond Wong collection
  • Mapleburlthinglarge2
20" maple burl wall hanging, titled "Unearthed". Owned by Raymond Wong.
  • Mapleburlwall1large
maple burl wall hanging, 16" across
  • Maplevase
    Simple spalted silver maple vase.
  • Reillyknockoffs
Round boxes made in the design of my friend Pam Reilly. These were turned to learn her technique but I won't make any for sale as they are her trademark design. Given as gifts to various people.
  • Segmentedlarge
Yes, it is as hard as it looks!
  • Silvermaplelarge
A beautiful piece of tiger striped silver maple was used to make this thick walled bowl.
  • Spikelarge
"Spike". I didn't notice the face in this piece till it was pointed out by an admirer. The spiky hairdo was intentional though.
  • Spintoplarge
A little round bowl with a lid that doubles as a spin top. It was given as a gift to a friend's daughter. It spins forever!
  • Tallcherrylarge
Tall cherry bowl, turned with an egg profile. Extremely hard to pull off, the tiniest error requires redoing of the entire profile.
  • Xmasredlarge
"Christmas" (what else would you call it?). Maple burl platter, the winner of the American Association of Woodturner's first national platter contest.
